Vicon SMS is a full-featured, credential-based system running on a TCP/IP network. It can be accessed and controlled by a standard web browser on a local or wide area network, the Internet or a wireless network. No software installation is required to access the system. It is fully compatible with the ViconNet® Video Management System and combining the two provides a complete solution for access control and video surveillance applications from small systems to very large systems with over 3,000 access/monitoring points.
The basic components of Vicon SMS are as follows:
• Controllers: The controller is the “brain” of the system. Each SMS system requires one controller. The Controller contains the operating system, web server, database server and application software. The Controller also maintains the system log, which records all access and other system activity.
Controllers are offered in three basic sizes to accommodate different size systems.
• Network Controller
• Enterprise Controller
• Enterprise Ultra Controller
• Nodes: Nodes consist of a Network Node and up to 7 Application Cards packaged in a rack or wall-mount enclosure. A MicroNode is a combination Network Node and Application Card packaged on one circuit card that can be powered by PoE.
The nodes store data collected from the access control events that have occurred via the hardware connected to them (i.e. John Smith swiped his card to enter the building at 7:40 a.m.) as well as communicate this information to the network. They also allow communication back to the connected devices to perform operations such as unlocking a door.
Nodes are available in three models:
• Wallmount enclosure
• Rackmount enclosure
• Micronode
• Network Node: The Network Node makes and manages access control decisions with data provided by the Network Controller. It also manages the communication between the Network Controller and the Application Cards, which are connected to the system’s alarm inputs, relay outputs, readers and temperature sensors.
• Application Cards: The Application Cards serve as the portal between a wide range of third-party access control hardware (card readers, sensors, relay switches, etc…) and the SMS network. Four types of Application Cards are available to support different access control functions.
