Surveyor Dome cameras and a V1344 matrix system from Vicon Industries
have recently been installed at the St Gilles prison in Brussels.
St Gilles is a medium security prison in the northern suburbs of Brussels
which often acts as a holding facility for those awaiting sentencing. Other prisoners include juvenile delinquents on serious charges. The establishment is known for its innovative programmes designed to integrate inmates back into society on their release.
The Vicon Surveyor domes are being used to monitor communal and recreation areas in the prison. They are the 2000 model which feature three-phase micro-stepping motors and a proprietary software driver delivering smooth and silent operation through the entire range of speeds from 0.25°/sec to 300°/sec. The units have self-learn tours which simplify programming and allow for in-sequence editing and reverse touring.
The design features a drive mechanism that can be operated independently from the housing, so allowing installers an easy way to test functionality prior to permanent mounting. Extensive menu-based programming configures each unit to individual requirements.
The prison population is approximately 700 inmates living in 500 cells. St Gilles has a long history having housed many political prisoners from the Belgian Resistance during WWII and a number of Allied airmen. The most famous inmate has been the Italian symbolist poet, Dino Campana.
The installation has been performed by Vicons local partner, DiTech of Alost to the north-west of Brussels.
DiTech have also installed Vicons V1344 matrix from the Nova series. This is a high-density programmable control and matrix switching system. The unit features a built-in interface for control by host computer, complete with graphical Configurator for a PC.
