Pan & tilt cameras with heavy duty drives and matrix control units
from Vicon Industries are being installed on the £1.2 billion Elefsina-Spata
highway in Greece.
The contract was obtained through Vicons close work with their local partner Wackenhut Securities (Hellas Greece.) The highway is part of Greeces PATHE system and is being constructed by the Attiki Odos AE consortium lead by Aktor and Frances Transroute International.
Security and logistics officers responsible for the highway will be benefiting from Vicons heavy duty, variable speed Vistar pan & tilt drives. These units are housed in a weatherproof, sand-cast aluminium casing and are capable of operating with loads of up to 35 pounds.
The variable speed facility gives users much of the flexibility associated with a dome camera. The weather-proof protection is provided by O rings and gasket seals while the heavy duty motors are constructed with hardened-steel gear trains which require minimal maintenance.
It is expected that the highway will create 2,000 permanent jobs when it opens in June, 2002. The project will relieve pressure on the Athens infrastrucutre and provide access to the new international airport at Spata. The route will also be of significant value if Athens retains the right to stage the 2004 Olympics.
Greek officials predict that the Elefsina-Spata route will be used by 207,000 vehicles daily. They will be observed by transport police using Vicons VC2860 range of high resolution colour CCD cameras.
The Vicon cameras have dual autoiris modes and benefit from the extremely low levels of lag, blooming and transfer smear characteristics associated with CCD pickup devices. Picture quality is exceptional with 370,000 pixels giving sharp images and accurate colour rendition from an automatic through-the-lens (TTL) colour compensation system.
The easternmost section of the highway between Spata and Pallini is expected to be ready in time to link Athens with its new international airport at Spata, scheduled to open in the spring.
