Xupu Bridge in Shanghai

Vicon Industries have recently supplied matrix switchers, pan/tilts and environmental housings to the $247m Xupu Bridge in Shanghai. The bridge was constructed to improve traffic flow between the Huning and Huhang expressways. It is also a main thoroughfare to Hongqiao airport and will serve the new Pudong airport. Xupu is a cable-stay suspension bridge and takes eight lanes of traffic.

The Vicon CCTV equipment is used for both security monitoring and traffic management surveys. The units supplied include the V390 weatherproof pan/tilt drive which is a heavy duty unit with autopan, capable of operating with loads of up to 36 kg. The motors are exceptionally robust and are constructed with hardened steel gears that do not require lubrication.

Staff from the Shanghai Municipal Engineering Dept are also benefiting from Vicon's V1422 Nova CPU-based control and switching system. This is a self-contained digital control unit and matrix switcher for applications with up to 32 camera inputs and 8 monitor outputs. It includes Protech graphic configurator software.

Xupu bridge was constructed using steel box girders and cross beams together with pre-cast reinforced concrete slabs. The bridge was erected on a cantilever assembly by the Shanghai Foundation Engineering Company. Twin towers support 240 stayed cables and the main span is 590m. Current estimates show that 50,000 vehicles cross the structure daily at speeds of up to 80km.
