Vicon pan/tilts together with heavy duty environmental housings have recently been installed at the Shanghai TV Tower, one of the tallest buildings in the world.
The Oriental Pearl TV Tower is situated on the east bank of the Huangpu River next to the Shanghai Convention Centre. It is benefiting from Vicon's V390APT pan/tilt unit. This is a weather-proof, heavy-duty pan/tilt with autopan capable of operating with loads up to 36 kg. The pan/tilt's heavy-duty motors are constructed with hardened steel gears that never require lubrication. All-weather protection is provided by "O" ring and gasket seals with TeflonTM wear surfaces.
Vicon enjoy a strong presence in Shanghai having a major regional office in the city. This makes for close relationships with local installers and on this application Vicon technicians worked with Chinese engineers on the back-focusing of a massive, locally produced 50x lens which feeds pictures to the Shanghai fire department. Vicon personnel also carried out extensive wind load studies with city engineers.
The TV Tower is Shanghai's largest tourist attraction and is known as the "Eiffel Tower of Asia." It features three massive spheres on the central part of the tower and visitors can go into these. An Iwerks TurboRideTM theatre will open in the tower shortly.
The tower also features Vicon's V8000 environmental housings with sun shields. These weather-proof enclosures have been specially designed for outdoor use and can accommodate most CCTV cameras and lenses. Accessories for the housings include a thermostatically-controlled blower and heater to maintain operating temperature limits.
Much of the construction of the tower was performed by the Baoshan Steel Structure Works, part of the Grand Tower Group. The tower is adjacent to a 1.3 million-square-foot retail and entertainment shopping centre which is currently nearing completion. Work has also begun on a neighbouring 88-acre mixed use development of entertainment facilities, hotels and office buildings.
